BN: Final Cut
This is the finished and fully edited version of our final cut of the slasher opening.
Evaluation Question 1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real products?
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
An example that our film opening was based on was that of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre which was a film by Tobe Hooper in 1974 we think our film opening shows some aspects of this because of the stages of equilibrium, which is the theory of Todarov where by it starts with a dis-equilibrium and then goes back in time to the equilibrium, and we feel that we have done this with our slasher film
opening.

Next we also had an idea of some of the story line in our slasher film to go by what some of the Halloween by Wes Craven in 1996 Film was about, where by in the stalking scene Barthes theory of narrative enigma is used to build up tension and mystery of who the killer actually is and we have used this technique in our slasher opening. Also the titles and opening credit is were based on the titles and credits of the Halloween film
Also the final films we looked at were Mad House and A Noghtmare on Elm Street because the idea we were going for fitted in with these examples and they could relate to these films due to narrative enigma and the scenes of the sexual activity and the intertextality with the title and A NightMare on Elm Street and Black Nightmare also with the mad house opening it shows the main idea of the dark rooms in the film and compares well with our film

Evaluation Question 2
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
All of the actors and actresses viewed in our opening scene are aged 16 - 17. We wanted to make our killer seem a lot older aged about 30 so that this would help our secondary audience which is people aged in there 20's. This helped us allow our film appeal to a larger audience.
The characters in our film are all from West Yorkshire and have Yorkshire accents, this is not a very commonly known accent this means that people from other countries such as America, some parts of Europe and even parts of England would not understand what is been said. Therefor we would not aim our target audience to be Americans. Despite the Yorkshire accents the movie is a slasher film which commonly many people are not overly fussed about the accents in which the characters speak nor the location in which the film is made as they are only interested in the gore and the thrill they gain from the movie.
Characters that are viewed in our opening scene
The first characters that are viewed in the opening scene of out film are, the final girl, the scream queen, the jock and the killer at certain points. The final girl in our film is the classic stereotype of the final girl with brunette hair and wearing clothes that signifies she is a rather nerdy person who is intellectual and has a very small social life. At the beginning of our film she is seen getting out of a car and carrying her studying books in her arms down the road. The next character that we show in our opening scene is the scream queen, she is typically blonde and busty and sexually active, in the opening scene she is seen exiting the car with the final girl and her boyfriend (the jock). Finally the last character that we view in the opening scene is the killer, we only view him a couple of times throughout the opening scene cutting back and forth between shots. He is your typical killer with a certain weapon which is relevant to his history or his profession. I have connoted my characters as the stereotypical characters you would imagine to find in a slasher movie.
The scream queen in our film opening is based on the classic stereotypical scream queen from all slasher genre's. She represents the stereotypical scream queen as she is blonde and busty. She also represents the role well as when she gets out of the car she walks inside the house with her boyfreind ( the jock ) and we see further into the opening scene the pair of them going into the bedrom and shutting the curtains bhind them to connote the fact they are a partaking in sexual activity.
Finally the killer in our film opening is based on many classic slasher movies such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween where both the killers are wearing masks to hide there identity. We also included this in our film to build narrative enigma until the end of the film where the killer is finally revealed. He wears a black mask to hide his identity and his common choice of weapon is a meat cleaver. The reason for this is due to the fact that we linked our killer to have had a past as a butcher who over years psychological obssesion with a certain teenage girl becomes a killer.

Q3 Distribution
What kind of media institutions might distribute your media product and why?
The 7 Slasher films that i looked at in previous posts have all had a certain set target audience in mind, this being a teenage to young adult age range. This signifies that the genre Slasher tends to be a more complicated and heavy genre to follow from the slashing of the characters to the choice or way of killing the characters. This is where I feel our slasher film could be a good idea for the slasher genre and would be a success.
Distributing films come from the major film company's such as Warner Brothers or Universal Studio's However they are american businesses, in the UK or England alone the major film companies are WARP Films and Working Title Films, looking at some of the films which have been produced by these producing companies are low budget indie films such as Donkey Punch and This is England also Dead Man's Shoes which shows. Due to not much funding and being based in the UK we for our slasher film would choose either WARP or Working Title to distribute it.
These companies then distribute the films into the cinema's and onto the Television which can then be viewed by the public and then get put onto DVD by the distributors. The distributors are also responsible for the advertisement and commercialism this is why the big money companies (the big 6) are good for this and the higher budget films which is maybe not the best thing for our film as we don't have the funding. So baring this in mind the English film companies such as WARP, Working Title and an even more low budget indie film company would be Optimum Releasing would be a good choice for a company to distribute our slasher film.

Evaluation Q4
Who would be the audience for your media product ?
Additional Wider Audience
There would be an audience of which would possibly watch this and the age range that we have set for this would be the younger teens aged from 12-15 and the older mid twenty's from about 21-26 which shows that our film opening would make more money when marketisation is brought into context. Also this age range makes the target audience more flexible and less pressure is put on to make us fit one certain range alone
Audiences Who it Wont Appeal to
The audiences who the film opening might not appeal to is that of the middle aged range for example from ages 30-50 and then the elderly from the ages of 60-80 this would be because it wont be a sort of film that they will like or might not want to watch, Also the young people from the age of 0-11 due to it being too violent for them and too gory also it might be too hard to follow the plot for them
The core target audience we have aimed our slasher film at is the age range of about 15-21. We have done this because it is a wide audience and we ourselves would watch the film and we feel that it is the sort of thing that this age range watches more often than not, and that the majority of films that are watched by this age range in the cinema or on DVD are the slasher or horror or hybrid genre films.

Evaluation Q5
How did you attract your Audience?
The ways in which we addressed the audience and made the slasher film appealing and worth while to watch was that we aimed it at a certain specific target group which was from the age group of 15-24 and we chose this group because we felt that it would benefit the films marketisation. We feel that our film opening interacts with the audience through the various different mise-en-scene aspects and the effects with editing and sound to emphasis the clips on screen.
Facebook
We used various different techniques to address them, one of the ways was through Facebook, use used this to promote the viewings of our slasher opening though the many hundreds of our friends on the social networking site. This was a good and key way to show people the work that we had done and to get feedback from our close friends and to then get their ideas on how to make better adaptations to make the film opening look more aesthetically pleasing.
Casting, Setting
The casting that were used in our film opening were of a similar age to the ones that we aimed our film opening at, this means that the audience can relate to the characters in terms of feelings and actions as to what they do in the film opening, Also the setting was an element which made the audience relate due to it being set in the north of england where most of the friends on Facebook and Youtube will know of and can tell that it is set in the local area which will make it appeal to them, Also when considering our target audience the age range for that will understand more if the characters are of a similar age.
Male Gaze and Theories
The theory of the Male Gaze was that of Laura Mulvey and that was focussed on how the girls body just becomes objectified in the slasher film and how it was only there for the film to appeal to men only because of the women wearing revealing clothes, however in ours we could not use nudity and lots of sex appeal so we had our scream queen dressed up in skinny jeans. Also another theory which was shown in our film opening was the theory of Levi Strauss which was the theory of Binary Opposites where by the scream queen and the final girl were opposites with what they did and how they acted and what they looked like. Also the theory of Bathes and Narrative enigma was used in our film opening too which brought out a better out look for the film opening.

Youtube
Another way we achieved the audience influence and interaction was via Youtube and posting the videos on there, this was the main way we got our audience feedback where by when the videos got posted then people commented on the videos with their thoughts and ideas for us on how to again make improvements and to give positives to the good parts of the film opening.Casting, Setting

Q6 Technology
What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
To produce the films that we are making in school non of this would happen without the technology we have these days, people 20 or 30 years ago could not even imagine the amount of technology which is available to us now as back then. The Technology we use to create our film opening is as followed;

(this is a vodcast of this post)

- Apple Mac's
- Blogger
- Youtube
- IMDB
- Final Cut Pro
- Video HD Camera's
- Garage Band
various blogs to help us.

Blogger is the place where all the information goes on how we progress and share what we have found in terms of research and the process of making some footage of the putting together of our film openings also all the vodcasts and podcasts of how the process and coarse is going.

Youtube is a very good and useful place to get video clips
to compare and to post video's of how the progress of the film making is going also we can share and embed previous video's of what are relevant to the subject for example video's of already successful slasher film openings
IMDB is the place which provides the most relevant information for film making and what sorts of things from old already made films, IMDB is a online website which lets you look up any film or director from any t
film and shows you the cast. This is ideal for when we are assessing or analysing past film opening's.

Final cut pro is where the footage of the filming gets edited. This is the sort of technology that the pro directors and production company's use for the major films in the world wide industries. It just shows how the world has been subjected to digitalisation and it benefits the people like us who do not have a lot of funding to produce the massive smash hit films.
HD Video camera's that we use to shoot the footage for our film openings are so high tech that major film producers didnt even use them about 10 years ago and they are more advanced than the one's they used back then. They provide us with an endless amount of opportunity to shoot the key footage and right frames to put our film openings together
Garage Band although i have not used it fully yet i have seen the effects of it and seen enough clips of where the sound tracks from it can be applied to the film openings as a form of background music either diagetic or non diagetic and sometimes providing an audio bridge. This is useful for creating sounds rather than having to pay for a full band to play for your benefits.

Evaluation Question 7
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Since the prelim task at the start of the year my knowledge and understanding and also skills to do much more from the basic task where there was no real planning or effort put into making the prelim video the only basic things we were taught for that were the three concepts of shot reverse shot the 180 degree rule and the match on action all of which we had to include in the prelim task, then moving onto the microdrama with the rest of the guys in my class and taking in vital information from Dave in class time.
For the microdrama task we were not told to do much but that we had to produce a short film that lasted between 5-10 mins and we did it over a day when we were all free, this was all done over the social network site of Facebook to arrange a location and place where the short film was going to be filmed, the site was my house and the cast was all of the lads in the class due to all of them being in a group with me. The micro drama was good and got a lot of praise from various different teachers and was said at the time was the best micro drama produced to date in the media class of Dave
Also not only just the camera work but the different sorts of information and techniques and terminology was worked on and developed over the year and this was all done in class time to gain the full advantages sheets with the different bits were provided by Dave of which all the notes and techniques are on which we have used to help remind us of the different things learned. Also the exam techniques and explanations of what we have to do and need to include in various different essay questions and how to go about answering and in detail produce good answers with all the terminology and examples to gain the top grades
Moving on to our coarse work which was the main and key aspect of the years work where we were able to show what we had learned in terms of camera work and editing and soundtrack skills also it was a good way to see what different correct decisions we made and what would need to be worked on in terms of developing and improving areas that needed changes, The cinematography and miss en scene that was used in our film opening were good as told by Dave and the various different feedbacks we got from viewers, also the effects and editing were good as well and they worked well with how we used different things to create more of an atmosphere and sense of tension throughout the film opening, However what we felt that the sound track could have been better and was fairly rushed and as some of our feedback suggests so did other viewers. However we feel that the film opening was a success and we are proud of the work that we have created.

BN: Shooting Schedule
This is the schedule we used to secide which shots we were going to used in our filming of the slasher film opening
Tuesday, 30 April 2013
BN: Violent Scene
For the violent scene in our slasher film opening it has had to be changed three times just to create and get the effect we want and need to create a sense of realism and to make it more believable to the viewing audience.
Fast Pace Editing
Fast Pace Editing on Final Cut Pro |
To create an authentic and real life effect within the violent scene the longer takes needed to be cut up and put into an order of which the flash backs and the real time could be made to fit in. Also the fast pace causes the audience to feel that but of tension and fear build up in this scene due to the editing
Heartbeat Sound on Final Cut Pro |
Heartbeat Soundtrack
The heartbeat was used to build up the audiences heart rate along with the heart beat of the characters on screen, this gets the audience to sort of feel some of the emotion on screen with the charcters. Also the heart beat increases during the violent scene which raises awareness of what is happening on screen at the time
Slow Motion
We added slow motion to create more of an impact for when the chopping scene is intercut between that and the violent scene so that it doesnt show the violence however the significance of the chops incidactes or signifies that the violence has taken place but is being hidden by the chop.
BN: Editing Titles
At the start of our film we have put in titles, which have needed thought with the font and colour of them, Below are some of the few ideas we have been looking at and what thoughts we have had of why we should use them at the start of our slasher film opening.
This Font we used was the Capitsalsd font in Final cut pro and we used this font because it was a serif font and that signifies the sharp knife effect of the slasher genre with the little serif edges of the lettering and indicates the cutting edge horror.
For this Font we have used a completely differnet Font where by we have gone with the Eccentric STD Font which makes the title look like that from the film Halloween (John Carpenter, 1978) showing some intent of intertexuality from this title example as well as the previous one.

Props Used in our Shoot
For our shoot we needed some main props to give our film opening the effect it needed to show any signs of success and to have a significance, these were as followed;
The Meat Cleaver we used in the film opening was used as an iconic piece of weaponry we chose this weapon due to its significance to the occupation of the killer and the relevance of it was to show his power and authority. This was chosen also to show some intertextuality with the knife used in the slasher film Scream ( Wes Craven, 1996)

The Apron or Piny of the killer was also a significant piece of prop work, this helped the audience pick up and know who or what the killer was and the occupation of the killer however it doesn't give too much away about the character other than a violent one due to chopping up meat.
The Black Boots were used to create a sense of power and authority with the sounds they made going down the stairs into the basement and across the basement floor this was also used to make and set a good image of the butcher uniform as apose to trainers or just normal shoes this was intertextuality from the film A Nightmare on Elm Street where by the Killer in that who was Freddy Cruger wore boots of a similar style and type

DE- Soundtrack
Soundtrack
To make the soundtrack for Black Nightmare we used a software called 'Garage Band'
Selecting software instruments for soundtrack |
When making the soundtrack for Black Nightmare we used a ambient soundtrack of rain falling to emphasise the setting and also to add diagetic sound to the opening scene.
Using different types of soundtracks over one another |
We also used different types of instruments such as stringed and drums. This enabled us to use long drawn out notes and also use fast tempo beat to build suspense and tension. By mixing the two various types of tempos and beats this added exaggeration to the scene and helped build the tension.
When the killer walks down the stairs we used Leitmotif music which links to the killer when he is visual on screen or when he is about to make a appearance.
Leitmotif music for when killer is visual |
DW- Stairs and Titles Re-Edit
Stairs/Titles Sequence To Be Re-edited
With this scene we need go back and edit it all because of the font used on the titles because it's not really a serif font or sans-serif font so we will go back and and apply a serif font to signify the slasher genre more as this is a common convention used is slashers. Also the audio is all out of sync because it sounds like the killer is dancing down the stairs because when it goes to a blank screen there's an overlap of footsteps and he seems to take forever to get down the stairs so we will go back and change this by cutting it and editing the audio so it sounds more realistic.

Rough cut killer's feet |
This is a shot of the killer's feet and we were trying to provide narrative enigma for the character, however trainers don't give a good description towards a killer instead it seems more like a teenage boy, so when we next shot this scene we used old black boots instead to give a more realistic description for the killer to him being older.
